I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of letter from the Colonial Office, under your hand, dated 21st inst., which I received by post from London & Edinburgh yesterday, where I am to proceed on operation, soon, under Doctor Syme if just arrived in Town, by night train, and at once forward (enclosed) the Testimonials mentioned in this despatch to me, which I now re-enclose.
I beg also to enclose a letter to Sir Hercules Robinson when I was again obliged to return to Europe (N = 20), and the accompanying papers (No. 21, 22, & 23) regarding my career in Hong Kong and my present situation. I pray that the immediate call for these papers may be excused as they are in rough condition, as I have not taken time to transcribe the fair copies or repair the other battered documents.
These enclosures, together with a copy of my letter to His Grace the Duke of Newcastle of the 28th February 1860 (in the prosecution ...), are sent to The Under Secretary of State, Colonial Office, Downing Street.
